C16 Biosciences Palm Oil Alternative Recognized by Venture Investors

SP Investment Fund is a Los Angeles company that pursues investments in health sciences and biotechnology firms with significant upside potential and a focus on benefiting society. Among the companies SP Investment Fund has invested in is C16 Biosciences.

At the heart of C16’s value proposition is reducing the need for environmentally destructive palm plantations, through the creation of palm oil alternatives. These rely on a natural fermentation process based on synthetic biology principles.

As featured in a 2020 Fast Company article, the company CEO describes palm oil as a “really good, functional oil” that unfortunately only grows in rain forest regions that help safeguard the planet’s biodiversity and act as a carbon sink. The deforestation associated with the palm oil industry is linked with half a billion tons of carbon dioxide output annually.

The utility of this approach was recognized when it had a successful Series A round of $20 million in investments. This was led by the Bill Gates-founded fund Breakthrough Energy Ventures, which exclusively focuses on leading-edge innovations that combat climate change.
